With the help of Accudyne Systems, Inc., the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) has a new machine to produce hail balls to be used in studies carried out in their large wind tunnel located at the IBHS Research Center. Because hail balls are formed through an accretion process within thunderstorms, they have very specific properties that cannot be reproduced by simply freezing water in a ball mold. The hail ball production process and resulting machine was cooperatively developed and commissioned in 2016.
